Teacher joins frontline fight to find a COVID-19 vaccine

Dr. Nick Geary (Science and Engineering Teacher) is currently working on a Covid-19  task force supporting HM Government's medical needs from a scale-up perspective. Dr. Geary was selected because of his previous experience working in the pharmaceutical industry; which included scaling several active pharmaceutical ingredients that are prescribed today.

“I was requested by HM Government to join a task force on Covid-19 medicines and vaccines. I was selected based on my career profile filed with the institute of chemical engineers and IoP - which includes my work on drug substance API (active pharmaceutical ingredients).

The scope of the work changes fairly quickly but is focused on easing the supply chain for various medicines that alleviate symptoms (for example ARDS and Small Molecule Anti-virals) and also diagnostic reagents (eg., RT-PCR test kits). Obviously, there is a large team working on this and my specific role is to lead the small molecule team. “

His efforts form a small part of a larger team that are in turn working with many other teams on supplying medicines, PPE and diagnostics. This is a volunteer role that he is undertaking alongside continuing to support the remote teaching and learning currently available for our students.

As a college we are very proud that the expertise we have in our teaching team is able to help in the fight against COVID-19.
