Great results lead to fantastic destinations for UTC Portsmouth Sixth Form students

Students at UTC Portsmouth are receiving their A level and equivalent results today, with more than a third of all grades awarded A*-A (Distinction*-Distinction for diploma and certificate students).

There are many firsts in the destinations achieved by the cohort; including the first Oxbridge students, the first students to go to university to study Physiotherapy and Nursing, as well as the first Level 7 apprenticeship (which is the equivalent of a Masters Degree) with the Dyson Institute.

Pass rates have also remained high with top grades and 100% pass rate in some of the hardest subjects to pass including A level Further Maths, which had the highest number of A*-As in any subject with 67% of students taking the course achieving that grade.

Students undertaking the Extended Certificate in Engineering alongside two or three A levels also did exceptionally well, with 65% attaining a distinction or distinction star, the equivalents of A*-A grade.

As in previous years, university is the most popular option for next steps with around 56% of the year group choosing that route. 37% have opted for a Russell Group university as their first choice and 5% Oxford or Cambridge. The opportunities secured for Higher and Degree apprenticeships are also really impressive with many students heading to opportunities with our Employer Partners including; BAE Systems, DSTL, Royal Navy, UKSA and Airbus.

James Doherty, Principal at UTC Portsmouth said: “I am delighted for our students, the destinations they have secured speaks volumes for what this group of young people have been able to achieve. Two years ago, they were the students whose GCSE exams were cancelled due to COVID, so to have come through that time and take such important exams this year makes me very proud.

“As a college, we focus on making sure our students leave us with the qualifications and capabilities to achieve fantastic destinations and with so many new opportunities they are going on to, they are proving that with hard work anything is possible.”
