UTC Portsmouth supports International Women in Engineering Day

International Women in Engineering Day takes place on 23 June annually. The day focuses attention on the amazing careers in engineering and technical roles for girls, and allows us to celebrate the achievements of outstanding women engineers.

This year we are focusing on our female engineering students, their engineering role models and future plans:

  • Lottie Brindley

What career path would you like to follow?

I would like the join the Navy as an Officer specialising in Weapons Engineering.

How long have you been interested in Engineering?

I’ve wanted to be in the Navy since I was young and I have always had an interest in their ships and things that they do.

Do you have any role models in Engineering?

My Dad was in the Navy and I would like to follow in his footsteps, I have also had a lot of influential engineers in my family who have been involved in everything from canal construction through to Creme Egg wrapping.

  • Charlotte Rust

What career path would you like to follow?

I’d like to go into a career in robotics - that is my dream. I would like to work for a big international company but also one that works and explores beyond the earth.

How long have you been interested in Engineering?

I have been interested in engineering since 2014 and before that I wanted to be a Forensic Scientist.

What made you choose UTC Portsmouth?

Because I know that I want to go into engineering, I knew that UTC Portsmouth was a logical step. It narrows my focus and allows me to explore contacts with some of our main partners such as Airbus and BAE.

  • Zoe Bowbrick

What career path would you like to follow?

I’d like to go into environmental engineering and come up with solutions to various problems regarding climate change, pollution and clean energy supplies from across the globe.

How long have you been interested in Engineering?

Since my art teacher suggested it to me in year 10 after I showed a passion for metalwork and metal sculpture in class.

Do you have any role models in Engineering?

A few of my uncles have worked in the engineering sector before, and my cousin is currently undertaking a degree in aerospace engineering at Surrey University so I tend to look to them for advice regarding careers in engineering.

  • Laura Caneira

What career path would you like to follow?

I would like to get a degree in something to do with science. However it is not a necessity to become a pilot, so I may join an aviation school to train as a commercial airline pilot instead.

How long have you been interested in Engineering?

I’ve been really interested in sciences since year 9 and have looked at futures to do with sciences since year 10-11. Whilst looking at careers many lead to engineering.

Which companies would you like to work with in the future?

Any commercial airline, or for the RAF. Anywhere that will give me the opportunity to fly.

  • Kaitlyn Harvey

What career path would you like to follow?

Ideally, I’d like to stay at UTC Portsmouth for 6th Form and then hopefully go to university to complete an engineering degree. I’d like to join the Navy as a Weapons Engineering Officer as a long term goal.

How long have you been interested in Engineering?

I’ve had an interest in engineering for about 5 or 6 years after speaking to a family member about how things worked and how they were made.

Which companies would you like to work with in the future?

My first step would be to join the Navy as I want to be part of a team and do the best for my country. Following that I would like to see what other opportunities are out there in other areas of engineering.
