First GCSE results exceed average for UTC Portsmouth

The first cohort of GCSE students at UTC Portsmouth are receiving their results today, which have far exceeded UTC averages in every category.

The specialist STEM college, which opened less than two years ago, has had a short time to work with these students towards their GCSEs, but has produced some fantastic results, particularly in Maths and Sciences.

77% of the 80 strong cohort achieved a grade 4 or above in Maths, with 56% achieving a 5 or above.

Grades in the sciences were also strong with 78% achieving a grade 4 or above in Biology and 66% a 5 or above, 88% getting a grade 4 or above in Chemistry and 59% a 5 or above, and 83% achieving a grade 4 in Physics and 51% a 5 or above.

Students are now making their decisions on next steps, with some choosing to continue their STEM education at UTC Portsmouth in the Sixth From, while others are starting apprenticeships or heading to other colleges to pursue various passions.

Ciaran O’Dowda, Principal of UTC Portsmouth said: “ We are really delighted with our first set of GCSE results. These students only joined us in September 2017 from many secondary schools across the region in order to undertake a specialised STEM education. Science and Maths are our flagship courses and we are so pleased that students have got the very best out of their experiences with us.

“When we compare how they have done with other similar STEM providers nationally, students will be rightly very proud of their achievements. This is a clear indication that for students with a passion for STEM in the Solent region, UTC Portsmouth provides an appropriate curriculum and delivers great outcomes.”
